シドニーを拠点とする日本人家族「The Hatori Noodlers」です。
スクールホリデーごとに少しずつ旅を重ねながら、2WDの車で行ける範囲で“家族の宝探し”を楽しんでいます。
初投稿の今回は、初めての宝探しトリップの Recap です。
私たちが、記念すべき初の宝探しの場所に選んだのは、
シドニーのほぼ真北250㎞に位置する Nundle というエリアです。
割とフォシッキングで人気のエリアらしく(特にゴールド)、Facebook グループ等もありました。
所要時間的には5時間弱と、子連れ旅には大分長いのですが、
その前の夏休みキャンプで5時間ドライブを経験していたのと(色々な動物に会える素晴らしい場所だったので、追々そのレポートも書きたいと思います)、
この時点で一番近いメジャーなフォシッキングエリアだったので、このエリアに決めました。
できるだけ詳細に思い出し、初心者向けの情報をお伝えして行きたいと思います。
We’re The Hatori Noodlers, a Japanese family based in Sydney.
Each school holiday we take short trips and enjoy “family treasure hunting” within the reach of our 2WD.
This post is a recap of our very first fossicking trip.
For our inaugural outing, we chose Nundle, about 250 km due north of Sydney.
It’s a fairly popular fossicking area (especially for gold), and we even found some Facebook groups about it.
The travel time is just under five hours—quite long with kids—
but we’d already managed a five-hour drive on our summer holiday camping trip (an amazing spot with lots of wildlife—we’ll share that report another time).
At the time, Nundle was the closest major fossicking area, so that’s where we headed.
We’ll share as many details as we can remember and offer beginner-friendly tips.

道具情報 / Basic Kit
- 作業手袋（耐切創・薄手）
指先の感覚が残る薄手。 - 折り畳み式シャベル
まずはこのサイズでスタート。車載しやすく2WD向き。 - ゴールドパニングセット
砂金狙いの基本セット。小型のふるい（クラシファイア）と併用で効率UP。 - ハンマー
岩を小割りにして内部を確認したり、表面を整える際に使う基本ハンマー。 - スコップ（先平タイプ推奨）
表層砂利の掘り起こしやトレイ用の採取に使用。 - 長靴（ゴムブーツ、滑り止めソール）
浅瀬作業や雨後のぬかるみ対策に。 - 安全メガネ／ゴーグル（AS/NZS規格）
叩く作業がある時は必須。 - 小型ガーデンレーキ（手持ち幅15–20cm）
表層の砂利を軽く掻くのに最適。 - チャック袋＆ラベル（S/M各数枚）
採集地点・日時・石名をメモできるように。油性ペンも。 - ルーペ（10×、視野18–21mm）
透明度・結晶面・内部の“きらり”を見るのに最適。 - 応急キット（バンドエイド、消毒、テーピング）
必要の無いエリアも有りますが、Forestry Corporation の Fossicking Permit を購入しておくと良いでしょう。
ひと家族$ 27.50で、一年間有効です。

- Work gloves (cut-resistant, thin): Thin enough to keep fingertip feel.
- Folding shovel: Start with this size; easy to keep in the car, good for 2WD trips.
- Gold panning kit: Basic set for fine gold; pair with a small classifier for better efficiency.
- Hammer: Used to break rocks into smaller pieces to inspect interiors or dress surfaces.
- Scoop/shovel (flat-tip recommended): For loosening surface gravels and collecting material for trays.
- Rubber boots/gumboots (non-slip sole): For shallow-water work and post-rain mud.
- Safety glasses/goggles (AS/NZS rated): Essential when hammering.
- Small hand garden rake (15–20 cm width): Ideal for lightly raking surface gravels.
- Zip bags & labels (a few S/M): For noting site/date/stone name; bring a permanent marker.
- Loupe (10×, 18–21 mm field): Best for checking clarity, crystal faces, and internal “sparkles”.
- First-aid kit (band-aids, antiseptic, tape).
Some areas don’t require it, but it’s a good idea to purchase a Forestry Corporation Fossicking Permit.
It costs $27.50 per family and is valid for one year.

予習のすすめ / Do Your Homework Before You Go

現地へ行く前に、できるだけインターネットで情報収集を。
- フォシッキング好き達が集まる Facebook グループに参加するのも一つの手です。
かなりの情報源になります。「Nundle fossicking」で検索すると出てきます。 - 地質や過去の採集記録、立入ルールをチェック。
- 僕は最近はかなりの部分でチャットGPT を使っています。
以前と比べてかなりの時間短縮になってます。 - 更に、YouTubeで「水晶の探し方」「ゴールドの探し方」「ふるいの使い方」「安全な割り方」などの動画を見てイメージトレーニングをしておくと、現地での“見る目”がぐっと育ちます。
Do as much research online as you can before you go.
- Joining Facebook groups where fossicking fans gather is also a great move—they’re a rich source of tips.
Try searching “Nundle fossicking.”
- Check the local geology, past trip reports, and access rules.
- Lately, I’ve been using ChatGPT for a large part of my prep.
Compared to before, it’s saved me a lot of time. - And on YouTube, watch videos like “how to find quartz,” “how to find gold,” “how to use a classifier/sieve,” and “how to break rocks safely.”
A bit of image training beforehand will really sharpen your eye once you’re in the field.

Many towns have a Visitor Information Centre.
If you get a rough grasp of the basic rules in the “About Fossicking Areas” section above,
then once you arrive, make your first stop the Nundle Information Centre.
They can give you the map shown above and point out beginner-friendly fossicking spots while you look it over.
Best of all, they display a variety of rocks and minerals collected from the surrounding area.
If you love stones, you’ll be in heaven—definitely drop in and check it out!
安全・マナー / Safety & Etiquette
- 立入可否や採集ルールの確認、ゲート・フェンスは必ず元通り
- 河川・斜面は天候次第で危険度UP。雨予報なら無理しない
- 掘り跡は埋め戻す／ゴミは持ち帰る
- Check access and collection rules, and always return gates and fences to their original state.
- Rivers and slopes get riskier with the weather—don’t push it if rain is forecast.
- Backfill your dig holes and pack out all rubbish.
収穫 & お気に入り / Finds & Favorites
実際にゲットしたお宝たち。
子供も親も全員で初めて探し出した水晶は文字通り宝物!
その日の夜は自分が見つけたお宝自慢大会(笑)
そして、ご飯粒が水晶に見える謎の現象が起きました。あるあるなのかな？(笑)
いつかは加工してアクセサリーにしたいと思っています。いつかは。。。(笑)
The treasures we actually brought home.
The very first quartz our whole family—kids and parents together—found is a treasure in every sense!
That night turned into a little brag session about our best finds (haha).
And then a funny thing happened: the rice grains at dinner started to look like quartz.
Is that a thing? (lol)
Someday we’d love to have them cut and made into accessories. Someday… (haha)

ハンター・バレー・ガーデンズ / Hunter Valley Gardens
行きの途中で寄ったハンターバレーガーデンズは冬のホリデー期間、
「SNOW TIME IN THE GARDEN」と銘打って、ミニ雪山やスケートリンク、浮き輪の様なもので滑り降りるミニゲレンデを設置して遊べるイベントを開催。
今回のトリップのもう一つのメインイベントとなりました。
子供たちが大はしゃぎする事間違い無しでおすすめです！！

まとめ / Closing Thoughts
実は、ゴールドパニングも何か所か見様見真似でトライしたのですが、
勉強不足過ぎて見つけられず😭
ですのでゴールド関連には全く触れられませんでした(笑)
薄々感づいていましたね？
途中、スキューバダイビング用のウェットを着てシュノーケルをつけて、
真冬の川を潜って金を探す強者にも出会い、「勉強して出直そう」と思うのでした。
ゴールドの他、 gemstone 等もちょっとした情報が出てきていたのですが、そもそも Sieves(ふるい)を持っていなかったので、上手く探せず断念しました。
Sieves を使ったフォシッキングは次の Oberonレポートで詳しくお話ししますね。
結局の所、今回水晶をゲットした場所は、シャベルが1つ有れば事足りた様です

Nundle にはまたゴールドリベンジしにまた戻ってくるっ!
Actually, we tried gold panning at a few spots, just copying what we’d seen —
but we were way too inexperienced to find anything 😭
So, you probably noticed we didn’t mention anything about gold this time (haha).
You guessed it, right? 😅
At one point, we even met a tough prospector wearing a scuba diving wetsuit and snorkel,
diving into the icy winter river in search of gold!
That’s when we thought, “We really need to study more and come back better prepared.”
We also came across some information about gemstones in addition to gold, but since we didn’t have any sieves with us, we couldn’t search very effectively and had to give up this time.
I’ll talk more about fossicking with sieves in detail in my next Oberon report.
In the end, it turned out that the spot where we found quartz only required a single shovel! 😅
We’ll definitely return to Nundle for our gold-panning revenge trip! ✨
